Fredonia Opera House to Premier First Live at the Met Telecast

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House will screen its first Live at the Met High Definition Broadcast – Wagner’s Die Walküre – on Sat., May 14, at 12 p.m.

“We’re very excited to be presenting our first live opera transmission,” says Opera House Executive Director Rick Davis. “This is a project we’ve been working on for some now; and thanks to the efforts and contributions of several supporters, it’s wonderful to see it finally come to fruition.”

In Die Walküre, Metropolitan Opera Music Director James Levine conducts visionary director Robert Lepage’s production of the second opera in Wagner’s epic Der Ring des Nibelungen. The production uses cutting-edge technology to tell the legendary story of the warrior maiden Brünnhilde (Deborah Voigt), who sacrifices her immortality to defend love.

The gifted cast of Wagnerians includes Bryn Terfel as Wotan, tormented king of the gods; Jonas Kaufmann and Eva-Maria Westbroek as the lovers Siegmund and Sieglinde; Stephanie Blythe as Fricka, the imposing queen of the gods; and Hans-Peter König as the jealous Hunding. World-renowned tenor (and noted Siegmund) Plácido Domingo co-hosts the live transmission with Joyce DiDonato, star of this season’s Live in HD transmission of Le Comte Ory and the Met’s upcoming revival of Ariadne auf Naxos.

The New York Times calls Voight “a compelling and creditable Brünnhilde. Terfel’s muscular singing crackled with intensity, incisive diction and gravelly power. Kaufmann’s dark, textured and virile voice has ideal Germanic colorings. As Fricka, the mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe is a compelling presence and formidable singer.”

At five hours, thirty minutes, Die Walküre is one of the Met’s longer operas. “There are two intermissions,” Davis notes. “One is at roughly 1p.m. and a second is at 3:15 p.m.” For this performance, the Opera House will have snacks and beverages available for purchase in the lobby outside of the theatre during intermission. (No food or beverage is allowed inside the theatre.) “We would like to offer a more lunch-type fare for the operas scheduled for the fall and would be interested in hearing suggestions from patrons,” Davis adds.
Live at the Met opera broadcasts are made possible by Dr. James M. and Marcia Merrins, who funded the purchase of the satellite transmission and projection equipment used in the series. Additional support comes from Bob and Shirley Coon, Bob and Susan Dilks, and DFT Communications.

As a special introduction to the Live at the Met series, tickets to Die Walküre are $15 and are available in advance by calling or visiting the Box Office at 716-679-1891 Tuesday – Friday, 1-5 p.m. and Saturday, 2-5 p.m. They also may be purchased online anytime at www.fredopera.org.
