Against a tan, wooden wall, among several guitar amplifiers and a beaten-up drum set stand three men.

One of the men, standing behind a microphone with a grey-spotted beard holding a Gibson ES 335 electric guitar, stares out at a crowd in Fillmore, NY.

Another man, clearly much younger, begins to sit behind the beat up old drum set.

The third man stands holding an Ibanez bass guitar getting ready for the inevitable downbeat.

These men have clearly done this before.

They are known locally as Wingman, a band that combines over 65 years of musical experience into one hell-of-a-good time.

On Jan. 28, Wellsville’s Cort Dunham, 55, his son Dan Dunham and close friend Justin Cornelius set up in what locals call the Fillmore Hotel for a night full of good, old-fashioned rock music.

Before you know it Dan, 23, hits the kick and the band busts out into a sound that fills the entire room. The lyrics to Bob Seger’s timeless classic “Sunspot Baby” ring out over the warm distortion of Cort’s guitar shuffles to the crowd.

Cort Dunham has been playing music publically since 1969. Formerly a member of the bands ZOAR and The Rogues, Cort brings the whole package to the stage. His smoky voice crawls overtop his expertly played riffs.

Dan Dunham first appeared on the local music scene at age four when he sat in to play guitar with his father and the rest of ZOAR. Dan now specializes in drums, making his small four-piece jazz set bellow across each and every venue he plays.

Cornelius, 30, a newcomer to the local music scene, has been laying down grooves for five years. He currently plays with other local bands Foolin’ and Harder Place.

The Fillmore Hotel show lasted deep into the night from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. only stopping a couple times to rehydrate.

The set spotlighted many classic songs. One of the best played songs of the night was a cover of Grand Funk Railroad’s “I’m Your Captain/Closer to Home.”

Highlighted in the beginning of the song is Cornelius on a bass groove which he made look easy. Cort’s solos throughout the song really showed that this was not his first time and, with the chops he showed, hopefully not his last. Dan, who kept the beat with each demanding stroke, added smooth tenor harmonies to his father’s smoky baritone lead.

The band also highlighted songs like another Grand Funk special “Were an American Band,” Eric Clapton’s “Crossroads” and Led Zeppelin’s “What is and What Should Never Be.”

These are only a few of the dozens of songs that Wingman played that night.

Each and every one of their covers has its own unique feel added to it to fit the personality of the band.

Cort shows exceptional improvisational skills with his guitar taking quotes from songs all over the musical spectrum and adding them into his solos.

Dan may possibly be the best drummer in the area with his ability to manipulate the snare drum and his bass kick to sound like a double bass set that only a Neil Peart (Rush) or Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews Band) would attempt to sit behind.

Despite being a bit down about his playing, Cornelius plays with a great sense of rhythm and transitions

Despite some technical difficulties, including a broken snare head and a shorting out PA system, the band put on a great performance.

Those that were there enjoyed the music. Many hopped on the dance floor and showed their appreciation for the many rockin’ songs.
