Despite the fact that I grew up in New York State, I despise the cold. So you can imagine when I was asked about covering the dog sled races at Allegany State Park on Saturday February 5th, I was a little...afraid.

After a somewhat frightening drive to “Camp Turner,” we managed to find a place to park: on the side of the road about a quarter mile away. Needless to say, I was freezing by the time we reached the camp.

We arrived just in time for the six mile sprints. As we weaved through a much bigger crowd than I had expected, a man with a clipboard yelled “Five minutes!”

The sleds were lining up. The dogs excitedly barked and whined and jumped. People had to hold the dogs to keep them in place.

Surprisingly, not all of the dogs were Siberian huskies. To me, most of the dogs just looked like…mutts.

“One minute!” yelled the man. The dogs from the first team were starting to quiet…like they knew it was almost time. The dogs next in line still whined eagerly.

“Thirty seconds!” Some people in the crowd began softly counting down.

“Release the dogs!” And they were gone. Before I could even comprehend what had just happened the dogs raced around the corner out of sight.

The next sled pulled forward. I was ready this time.

Whether it was the excitement or just my body numbing, I wasn’t cold anymore.

Once the sprints were over, everyone seemed to be talking as if they were old friends. Children were hugging the dogs as their parents took pictures and talked with the mushers.

“I’ve been doing it for about five years,” said one man, John Heverly, of Emporium, Penn.. “But I’m just in it for recreation.”

Heverly introduced me to his six dogs. “I have six more at home.”

Out of his 12 dogs, eight of them race. “If they don’t want to run there is nothing you can do to make them,” said Heverly.

Most of Heverly’s dogs were Alaskan huskies A.K.A the mutts I was seeing a lot of. Alaskan huskies are Siberian huskies mixed usually with hound or hunting breeds. By doing this, said Heverly, you are getting a breed that can not only go the distance, but also has speed.

However, Siberian huskies are mushers’ choice for distance races. According to Heverly, the Alaskan huskies can be trained to pace themselves but are most suitable for sprint.

A few of Heverly’s dogs in particular were bred from lines that had raced in the Iditarod.

The Iditarod is the world’s more significant sled race called the “toughest race on earth” by the Discovery Channel.

“They never want to quit,” said Heverly. His oldest dog racing on Saturday was 12! “But they have limitations just like everyone else.”

Heverly pointed out a notable team: lead by 10-year-old boy, Shea Bona.

When Bona was in second grade he learned about the Iditarod. Bona has now been racing for two years. “We started with two dogs,” said his mother. “And now we have eight.”

If it hadn’t started raining, I probably would have spent the day speaking with the mushers’ and their families and enjoying the exhilarating races.

However, what I wanted to do most was to spend time with these gorgeous, happy dogs.

“They love it,” said Heverly. “Look at the smiles on their faces.”
