Five Times August Performs at UPB

A scruffy, unshaven, beanie-clad Bradley Skistimas took the stage on Thursday in standard emo attire: a blue dress shirt, silver tie, and skinny black jeans. His persona clashed with the tightly polished image that hung on the large publicity banner behind him that portrayed Skistimas as a clean-cut, All-American artist. At first, it seemed that maybe it was just his attire that was out of place, but as the night continued, it became apparent that Skistimas’ enthusiasm was also on leave this evening.

Brad Skistimas, aka acoustic-pop rock act Five Times August, performed to a relatively small crowd at the Mukaiyama University Room at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Thursday at 7:30 p.m. After performing a powerful opening track, “Do It Again,” with plenty of pop and improv, Skistimas was a bit hit and miss with the audience.

“Thank you for being here [on] Thursday night. It’s Thursday, right?” Skistimas asked the audience. After a positive reply, Skistimas joked, “I don’t even know what day it is” with the long, drawn-out drawl of Mitch Hedberg, where “I don’t even know what day it is” is the punch line of a nonexistent joke. After an uncomfortable silence filled with one or two strained chuckles, the night continued awkwardly.

Skistimas described his brand of acoustic-pop rock as similar to that of Jason Mraz and John Mayer, but admitted to feeling a schism between the music he performs in concert and where he’d like to be musically.

“That’s who I was listening to when I started out when I was eighteen, but now my musical palette has broadened so much, I’m listening to jazz and old standards and a lot of music from the sixties, so it’s not really where I’m at in my head musically,” Skistimas claimed after the show.

“It’s funny, because I’m playing these songs while I’m writing new stuff. Every night I play these and I’m like, ‘God, I wrote these so long ago, it’s not really who I am anymore, but…’”

But what? Skistimas continues to play the songs that make him money and gig him shows, despite his claims of being a truly “independent” artist. Maybe he isn’t bound by record label contracts, but Skistimas still seemed rather bored and blasé throughout the entire show, occasionally nodding his head to the beat or stepping away from the mic to get down to his own tunes.

His lack of interest must have been contagious, because the audience also seemed disinterested after his first few songs. Though he received a better reception for his radio-friendly hits such as “First Time for Everything,” Skistimas still had a major void to fill.

“Any requests?” Skistimas inquired.

“Better With You!” one girl expectantly called out.

“You know I’m going to save that for like, the end, right?”

This, also, was intended to be a joke, but Skistimas was the only one laughing. When no one responded, Skistimas attempted to extend the punch line rather than appease his audience. The joke may have worked if the song had been “Save it for Later,” but it wasn’t.

“I’ll play that song, but maybe in about twenty minutes.” Like a carrot, Skistimas dangled requests in front of the crowd, seemingly afraid that students would leave if he gave in to their appeals. The highlights of Skistimas’ set would turn out to be his first and last songs, with one other jewel in the rough.

“I wrote this with my friend Michael, so I hope you get into it. Sing along if you realize you know the words,” he advised.

The opening riff of “Billie Jean” broke out to the most honest applause and laughter of the night at Skistimas’ subtle joke. And sing along the crowd did. Even Skistimas himself couldn’t help but groove along to his own rendition of Jackson’s classic.

There were a few moments when Skistimas’ new inclinations shone through, such as his closing song, “Audience of Zero.” Though it seemed that it wouldn’t be long before the audience got there, Skistimas started to turn the crowd around with “Billie Jean,” and although they didn’t ‘go crazy in the aisles’ like he implored, they did become somewhat more responsive towards the end of the show, and Skistimas’ jokes got a bit better.

Skistimas claims that he is currently undergoing a period of transformation. Though he is appreciative of his long career as a singer/songwriter, he feels it’s time to branch out into other styles of music and start to experiment.

“It’s kind of a jazzy-bluesy sound,” he says of his new direction.

“I’m a self-taught guitar player, and so last year I kind of realized, I need to educate myself more, so I started getting into theory and buying more books, and reading about it, and I’m glad I didn’t know what I was doing for so long, because it helped me develop my own style, but now I can incorporate my own style into actually knowing what I’m doing and where to go. It’s kind of about taking everything I’ve done, and expanding it to a wider range.”

Around the soft, mushy center of Five Times August’s Dashboard Confessional-esque songs, there seems to be a cocoon of new material developing, more in league with “Do It Again” and “Audience of Zero.” Skistimas seems to have ingested songs such as “Billie Jean,” and after a period of hibernation, is ready to break free of his old image into something new and different; maybe even something totally unique.
