Local musicians on school break hit Mojo's Saturday
Cale Hawkins Trio will perform
Local music fans are in for a treat this Saturday.
While he's home form school, Cale Hawkins and his lineup will be performing at Mojo's.
Looking to play original music, Cale was writing and recording all of the pieces, but the time came to go out and play live. He added a couple key elements and the Cale Hawkins Trio was born.
“The Cale Hawkins Trio formed in the summer of 2008, with the purpose to play my original music,” he said. “I was mostly performing solo at that point, but I wanted a way to play the music I wrote.
“I had recorded it in the studio, but I played all the instruments and that was impossible to do in a performance setting,” he continued. “I had known our keyboardist, Steve Davis, since age 10; he was my first instructor when I first entered Jamestown's Infinity Visual and Performing Arts Program and taught me most of what I know on keyboards. I met our drummer, Daniel Witherspoon, at that age as well. He was performing in an Infinity ensemble as well.”
the recent addition of a couple more artists from the Infinity Performing Arts Program, in Jamestown, has completed the performance line up for Cale and his band.
“We recently added DJ/turntablist Jim Blomquist, a.k.a. DJ Jimmy Whispas, to the mix to add breakbeats and scratches to our music,” Cale said. “I've been friends with Jim since I entered into the Infinity program - he was the digital recording instructor there. We also perform quite often with vocalist Marla Harris who's been a friend for many years and is a great vocalist.”
In addition to the originals, those in attendance may hear the sounds of soul, funk and Rhytm and Blues when the ensemble shows their Infinity roots.
Cale is home from his studies at Berklee College of Music, in Boston, where he is pursuing his degree in professional music. Steve and daniel can also be heard in their other bands, the Steve Johnson Band and Three Audience.
Mojo's is located at 104 East Second St., in Jamestown.
