Afton has been the founder and director of the YogaBetsy Yoga Center in Olean since 2000.
She has over 15,000 hours of teaching yoga to a wide variety of age and ability groups over the last 14 years. Aside from the yoga center Afton has taught yoga classes and seminars at area colleges, universities and several businesses also.
The YogaBetsy Yoga Center offers Power Yoga, Noontime Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Intermediate Flow and Hatha Yoga classes. The Hatha Yoga class includes guided relaxation and meditation at the end. Classes are Monday through Saturday.
“It’s isn’t just the postures we teach here, it’s the breathing and meditation. That’s a part of the whole package of preventative wellness that yoga has to offer,” said Afton. “Doing the exercises is just fine, but you won’t get the positive long-term effects the breathing and meditations add,” she added.
Originated in India, yoga is a system of movements and positions used to restore harmony and balance to the mind and body. Yoga improves your physical health, but also improves your mental health through meditation.
“It all leads up to meditation that’s what gives you focus, and really improves your quality of life,” Afton said. “This kind of yoga is all geared to get the body quieted down to get you comfortable enough so you can bring your focus inside and explore that inner landscape, and that’s where real healing begins,” Afton added.
The Lions Bear Athletic Association is also located at the Yoga Center.
Afton has her Hatha Yoga Teacher's Certification from the Himalayan Institute in Honesdale, Pa., as well as her E.R.Y.T 500 through the Yoga Alliance. She also has a B.A. in English from the Univ. of Rochester and an M.S. Ed in English instruction from St. Bonaventure University.
Tai Chi and Kung Fu Classes are taught by D.J. Washington. Classes meet Monday and Saturday. Tara Weatherley, a 1st Degree Black Belt for the American Wu-Yin Yan-Jing Federation is also a certified instructor and teaching classes at the yoga center as well.
