In the 1940s, pinup models against a nearly white background could be found in calendars prominently displayed at the local garage, some even found themselves on the nose of American bomber aircraft. Sadly, the art form seemed to subside in the popular culture.

A modern practitioner of that pinup style has surfaced in Olean. Following the inspiration of Robert Alvarado, Todd Gerhard has started to get noticed as a high-key, white-background photography master.

“I have always loved photography,” he said. “The last two years it has been kind of a passion and a hobby.”

The hobby was second fiddle to a career in film, raising children and working in traditional 9-to-5 jobs. All that changed in August with a shoot involving an old car and a pinup-style model.

“I did a photo shoot of a pin-up model with a '35 Dodge Pick-up out in Gowanda and submitted the photos to Old School Rods magazine and 11 hours later they contacted me and said they wanted to buy the set,” Todd said. “I was blown away.”

That shoot with that model not only set the wheels in motion for a future business, but has also given Todd the beginnings of a reputation in industry, as well as with the model.

“The model with the '35 was so impressed that she ended up contacting me and I did a full shoot with her with a '64 Harley and a '56 Oldsmobile, those will probably be getting published,” he said.

Photography wasn't Todd's first entertainment job, nor is it where he expected to end up, but he always knew he wanted to be part of the business.

“At 16, I was set on working in the entertainment industry,” he said. “I always tell people that it's kind of in my blood. My grandfather was a musician. He used to play for Johnny Cash, Porter Wagoner, and Dolly Parton. He was a traveling musician, played the Grand Ole Opry.”

While he loves his automotive photography, like that shoot of the '35 Dodge, Gerhard said his high-key, white background is his seasonal focus. Using Alvarado as his inspiration, Todd has found a niche and is carving out a talent.

“His (Alvarado) models don't dress in the traditional pinup (style), but his work is in that style of the '40s,” he said. “He always shoots on white and makes it about the model. There are no props or anything else. It's always been kind of a rule that when you're trying to get the attention of an audience, the whole thing is shot on white. The purpose is to focus the audience's attention on the model. That way the focus isn't on the shadowing , or this. It's all about the model.”

Having a model in his studio is only part of the work. There has to be a concept to the shoot. Todd said that can come from either his model or himself, but where does it come from beyond that?

“Basically, there is a lot of crap that goes on inside my head that bounces around,” Todd said. “Sometimes I'll see something and my brain will say I like that and I'll roll the concept. My head is constantly thinking how would I shoot this and what if I were shooting this?”

A lot of his work comes from pieces of the work of others, Gerhard said.

“Nothing is original. We have all seen something and that's where our concept comes from,” he said.

He continued to say that his art is no different than any other. According to Gerhard, his work, as well as any other piece experienced, should evoke an emotion. He uses that idea as he creates his shots.

“Art should be a love it or hate it type of thing,” he explained. “Nobody should look at art and say 'Well, that's kind of nice.' They should look at it and say 'That's awesome!' Or someone just says I think that's disgusting or that crosses the line.”

Todd used a recent experience to illustrate that idea.

“I had that recently on Facebook,” he said. “I uploaded a shot of a heavily tattooed model in an implied nude scene. There was nothing showing. I received two notifications from Facebook that I had uploaded offensive materials containing nudity. In a way it irritated me and at the same time it goes back to the love it or hate it thing. No matter what kind of nude you shoot, there are those that will think, 'That's dirty' or 'That's wrong'. I guess I evoked enough emotion in somebody to elicit a response.”

While he enjoys shooting models, he also does the portrait shot. From families to solo shoots, even pets, he'll shoot it. It doesn't take all that long for a sitting at Eye Kandy, either.

“Family portraits are relatively quickly,” Todd said. “I can usually do the shoot in a hour to an hour and a half, tops.”

Want to add a family pet? Not sure if it's the place for the kids? Todd says he can handle it.

“Family pets don't take too much direction. Young children are the same way,” he said. “You have to let the kids be them and catch the moments. For a family portrait, you're trying to catch that one moment.”

As his business builds, Todd says there is one type of photography he would like to avoid.

“As more people see my work, I am asked to do more portrait work. I tell everybody, at this point I shoot any and everything, but weddings. I've always told everybody that if I ever start shooting weddings...just shoot me now,” Gerhard chuckled.

As any businessman would, Gerhard is looking for the next arena to take his art. He said he is looking to break into the music promotion photography. No matter what it is tough, he said he looks to stay artistic in his work.

“I enjoy being artistic'” He said. “I kind of like the glory of seeing others enjoy the things you do. It's kind of nice to see someone see your work and say, yeah, that's kind of cool.”
