A Woman Finds a New Life She Never Knew Existed
Candy Kyler Brown's "What I Never Told You: A Daughter Traces the Wartime Imprisonment of Her Father"
The day her father died was the day she started a journey two lifetimes in the making.
Six and a half years ago, John Kyler died of a stroke while at his granddaughter’s softball game. Later that same day as Candy Kyler Brown was searching through her father’s military memorabilia, she found two notebooks she had never seen before.
Almost immediately, Brown was captivated.
“I remember telling people at the funeral home that I was going to write my father’s story because I was just, I was hooked,” Brown said.
The notebooks she found were a journal of sorts. It wasn’t a diary, but a place where he kept sketches, poems, doodles and names of people he knew or encountered. The notebooks traced his way through his 15 months as a prisoner of war (POW).
Since the book lacked a clear depiction of each day in the camp, she had to do a lot of reading between the lines.
So, on May 4, 2003 her journey to unlock the secrets of her father’s past begun.
John Kyler, from 197 Elm St., Salamanca, N.Y., joined the military in November of 1943 when he was 19 years old. He soon became a B-17 Ball Turret gunner. On Feb. 4, 1944, at the age of 20, his plane was shot down in Belgium. On the 21st, Kyler entered his first POW camp. Two days later he turned 21.
His first camp was in Lithuania, the second was in Poland and his last camp was Stalag Luft I in Germany.
Brown knew that in order to write a book about her father’s life, she would have to travel to all of those places.
In 2005, Brown was invited to the 60th anniversary of Stalag Luft I’s liberation. So, naturally, she went. This opened the door for her to get contacts for her research.
This trip was the first in a series of many to come. In 2006, she traveled to England, Belgium, Germany and Poland.
She went to England to see the airbase her father flew out of during the war. Then before going to visit the POW camps in Germany and Poland she went to Belgium to see where her father crashed.
In order to find her father’s crash site, she got in communication with Belgium researchers. They put out newspaper ads to try to find people who knew of an American crashing there during WWII, and one day, someone responded.
Brown was able to stand in the very same garden that her father landed in almost 60 years before.
“Any place that I went, I really, there is no feeling like it in the world, to walk where he walked,” Brown said. “I really have to say that I felt his presence and I knew that I needed, that I wanted, to write it like it was my father … I wanted to make it interesting to people. And there’s nothing like hearing it from the veterans.”
Then, as her last international trip, in 2007 she went back to Germany and Poland. However, she still had not seen her dad’s first POW camp in Lithuania. So, she wrote to the embassy and it arranged someone to take her.
“It’s just amazing the things I was able to find out,” Brown said. “I never felt that I could never write his story without retracing his footsteps and going to places that were relevant to his wartime history. It was like I was finding a different life for my dad.”
Besides all the international trips Brown took to follow in her father’s footsteps, she also visited his pilot in California.
For years, the pilot would not talk about his experiences in WWII or anything about it, that is until Brown came along. When he found out about the book he opened up. He even revealed why he wouldn’t talk about the war – he felt guilty.
You know that saying that “the captain must go down with his ship”? Well, that’s the same way in planes – the pilot must be the last one to parachute out. And he thought he did so. However, years later he found out that wasn’t true. In the back of the plane there is a separate compartment and even though he was the last to exit the front, he was not from the back.
He carried around that guilt until Brown showed him a poem he wrote called “Good Pilot.” You may think that this could apply to any pilot Kyler could have known, but he only knew one pilot.
Now, after finally talking about it, that pilot can speak of the war and feel no guilt. Brown helped that to happen.
To try to experience as much as her father did, Brown even rode in a B-17 with her mother, and she even jumped out of a plane in his memory.
“I could at least experience for a split second, to try to feel what he felt.”
It took Brown three years to write the story after her 2007 trip, but she didn’t write it in any traditional way. She wrote it as if she was Kyler.
“I felt like I became him … he was telling it through me.”
After all was said and done, Brown came out with a whole new view of her father’s life.
“I was proud of my father as my father, but learning about this young Sergeant John Kyler, I’m so proud of him. And he’s a symbol of the thousands and thousands of men like him that did the same thing … they did what they had to do (and) they came home and went on with the rest of their lives.”
Brown, of Killbuck, N.Y., will be at the Olean Public Library Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. to talk about the book and have a booksigning. All are welcome to come.
